Liverpool got back to winning ways with a 1-0 win against West Bromwich Albion thanks to Fernando Torres' first goal for the Reds since April.
A largely unconvincing display, watched by new-signing Raul Meireles, was notable for glimpses of the partnership between Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard that led to Liverpool ending second two years ago.
Elsewhere, a hard-fought 1-0 home win over Everton put Aston Villa back on track after an early European exit in midweek and a heavy defeat last weekend.
Luke Young's roving run into the opposition box paid off when he converted Ashley Young's through ball inside the first ten minutes. Both sides came close in an end-to-end encounter but Villa held on to leave David Moyes facing up to Everton's worst start in over a decade.
In the day's early kick-off ten-man Bolton battled back from 2-0 down to snatch a point at home to Birmingham. Roger Johnson gave Alex McLeish's men the lead early on with his first goal for the club, before Bolton goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen was dismissed for slapping the defender after a penalty area clash.
Birmingham doubled their lead after the break through Craig Gardner before being pegged back by Owen Coyle's spirited Bolton side. A Kevin Davies spot-kick, coolly placed into the top corner and a Beckhamesque free-kick from substitute Robbie Blake sealed a well-earned point for the Trotters.
Manchester City, meanwhile, were made to pay for their profligacy in front of goal by Sunderland. They were unable to recreate their high-scoring form against Liverpool earlier in the week with Carlos Tevez and Emmanuel Adebayor both missing good chances.
Darren Bent converted an injury-time penalty to give the Black Cats their first win of the season and condemn City to their first defeat.
