• Exclusive - Taylor: No reason why Arteta can't play for England

Gordon Taylor has told talkSPORT he would have no problem with Mikel Arteta playing for England.

The Spaniard will be eligible for the Three Lions under residency laws if he decides to apply for citizenship.

And PFA Chief Executive Taylor would have no issues with seeing the Everton midfield star in an England shirt.

It’s happened in cricket and rugby and the paying public seem to have accepted itGordon Taylor

He told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: "It’s going to be a big issue. It’s happened in cricket and rugby and the paying public seem to have accepted it.

"If a player comes over and wants to be nationalised as a resident, and is offering to play for England, then that should be given serious consideration."

Taylor, meanwhile, has backed the new Premier League 25-man rule which means clubs must include a minimum of eight home-grown players in their squads this season.

He added: "This is about a youth development programme and we need to give our youngsters a chance.

"I think it’s a good rule and we're getting there, but I won’t be happy until you have to have two or three on the field of play.

"It used to be that young players had chances to impress in reserve team football, alongside some senior pros coming back from injuries, but these days, with seven players on the bench, they're not getting match experience."

If Arteta plays for England it will be an utter disgrace !

If he does where will it end ? there has been talk of Almunia - If England need to rely on 2nd rate foreigners who are not good enough for their own national teams then we are in trouble.

Why do we always think that foreign is best ? Has Capello or Did Eriksson do better than Robson, Venables, Hoddle etc ??

I played as a Part-time professional footballer in the early 50's..at that time I was training to be a Bound Apprentice on a 6 year agreement...the team/club was Manchester Oity FC., I was a member of the PFA...(and still am an ex-member) also I am a member of the MCFC., former players association and attend their meetings an annual events etc., I played for the 1st ever FA Youth team @ MCFC...played for the England Youth team in '53 with the Busby Babes Sir Bobby Charlton and Wilf McGuiness (ex-MUFC manager)..I played in the England World Youth team competition in Germany '53...A big problem in those days...was that many of my mates did not have a Trade..so the club signed them Full-time Pro's they trained with 1st & 2nd team players..they were lucky in a way in that ..they gained confidence ..playing/training with Legends Don Revie..Bert Trautmann..Bobby Johnstone..Roy Clarke..Roy Paul..etc.,..we were told by our trainer..dont worry your turn will come...It took 5 years for Sir Matt Busby to get a place in MCFC 1st team...I came out of the Army after 2years National Service...gave my job up !...my Trade ? my Union? signed Full-Time Pro (I wanted to become a Star)? BUT unfortunately with-in 3 month..I sustained a ankle injury...also my compositor job...working under a 60watt light at close range made me short sighted..I could not see properly under the flood-lights...the club sent me to see a specialist..I ended up with Contact Lenses...they looked like the bottom of a Milk bottle..irritated my eyes every time I wore them...I just could not consentrate on what I was doing ? I was given a Free Transfer...somehow I did not recieve any Service (Benifit) Bonus fron the club or the (Football League)..ALL my mates who did 5/6yrs service (Part-time and Full-time) got a benifit I thinkI was the only one who did not ? ...The PFA are very good in what they do today..the Acadamys..seem to be doing a great job...and the Players are given the opportunity if the dont make the Grade to be trained in other fields !!
