Liverpool see off Man City to land highly rated youngster

Liverpool are poised to complete the signing of highly-rated Crewe Alexandra youngster Dan Smith.

The 16-year-old, who had also been courted by Manchester City, is set to join Liverpool for a fee of £300,000.

"We are naturally disappointed that Dan has decided to sign for Liverpool," said Crewe spokesman Rob Wilson.

"The club has received an undisclosed fee and future add-ons but we would have much preferred to have seen him play for our first team."

Smith, who has featured for England’s youth sides, was set to join Manchester City last month but has instead opted to follow the path made by former Crewe players Rob Jones and Danny Murphy.
