Nelsen set to leave Spurs and make MLS switch

Ryan Nelsen celebrates scoring for Tottenham with his team-mates against Bolton

Tottenham's Ryan Nelsen is set for a summer move to Major League Soccer on a free.

The defender moved to Spurs in January as cover for the injured Sebastien Bassong but he is not considered part of the club's long-term plans.

Having joined Harry Redknapp's men in the January transfer window, Nelsen went on to make eight appearances, scoring once.

But Redknapp is planning on a summer overhaul and Nelsen is set to be released, with Ajax's Jan Vertonghen close to agreeing a deal to move to White Hart Lane.

Nelsen, 34, spent four years at DC United before leaving them for Blackburn in 2005 and it is understood the club, along with other MLS sides, are keen on offering him a deal.
