Manchester United target signs new Schalke deal

Kyriakos Papadopoulos in action for Schalke

Manchester United target Kyriakos Papadopoulos has signed a new contract at Schalke.

The Greek centre-back has become a crowd favourite at Schalke since moving from Olympiakos in the summer of 2010.

And that had alerted Manchester United to the form of the 20-year-old, who starred against Sir Alex Ferguson's side in the 2011 Champions League semi-finals.

But Schalke have convinced Papadopoulos to sign a new deal at the club, with his deal now expiring in the summer of 2016.

And that is likely to end United's short-term pursuit, although it is possible they will continue to monitor the player's progression.
