Manchester City have been boosted in their pursuit of Daniele De Rossi after one of Roma's shareholders admitted the failure to sell him has amounted to 'commercial suicide'.
The recent disclosure of Roma's financial statements for the past year made for grim Reading, with the club posting an operating loss of £47million.
When asked how this could have been avoided, a shareholder told Il Messaggero: "It was commercial suicide failing to sell De Rossi."
Despite signing a new deal in February this year, the midfielder's future at the Stadio Olimpico is in doubt amid reports of a falling-out with manager Zdenek Zeman.
City boss Roberto Mancini is a long term admirer and could make an offer if Roma decide to cash-in.
