Athletic Bilbao have opened contract talks with Fernando Amorebieta although they remain apart in their proposals for a new deal.
Liverpool want to sign the defender and are keen on making a move in January, when his price-tag will be at its lowest.
The 27-year-old's contract expires on June 30 next year and he would be able to leave at a knock-down fee in January.
Bilbao do not want to risk losing such an influential player for nothing when his contract expires, which means they will be forced into listening for offers if they cannot extend his deal.
But the club will fight all the way to keep the Venezuela international and a new deal is currently on the table.
Amorebieta wants to weigh up his options and is said to be unimpressed with the current offer but Bilbao will hope further negotiations will result in a positive outcome.
