Real Madrid are ready to rival Manchester City in the battle to sign Edinson Cavani.
Jose Mourinho is desperate to land the Napoli striker, having seen his Madrid side falter in La Liga this season.
While Mourinho's future at Madrid is far from certain, the former manager is keen on Cavani and the club's hierarchy are interested too.
The Uruguay international is enjoying a fine season, having scored 16 in 16 for Napoli in Serie A so far and Roberto Mancini is desperate to land him.
Chelsea have also been linked with the 25-year-old but their focus is on Atletico Madrid's Falcao - leaving Madrid and City in a two-way battle to sign him.
Napoli have sent conflicting messages regarding their star striker's future in the past. At times, club president Aurelio De Laurentiis has appeared willing to sell but he has also spoken of his desire to keep Cavani.
The striker, who has scored 25 goals in 23 matches so far this season, has remained coy over his future and claims he is only focusing on Napoli.
And while a January move appears out of the question, City will face a real fight to sign their top target this summer with Madrid waiting in the wings.
