Reading hope to clinch the signing of Stoppila Sunzu in the coming days after his club president confirmed he was flying to England for a medical.
The defender had been on Arsenal's radar but Reading have stepped in to seal a deal for him.
Sunzu's contract at DR Congo side TP Mazembe runs until 2015 but Reading have persuaded them to sell, with only formalities left to complete the transfer.
The 23-year-old left for Reading on Sunday and will undergo a medical at the club either on Monday or Tuesday.
Mazembe president Moses Katumbi said: "Indeed, Sunzu is heading to Reading for tests after the agreement by TP Mazembe and the Zambia Federation. He just sent us a message in which he thanked the club."
