Liverpool are out of the running to sign Lazio's Modibo Diakite, with another Italian side joining Napoli in the hunt to land him.
Brendan Rodgers is expected to sign a defender in the summer as Jamie Carragher is set to retire.
He had tracked Diakite and was expected to make a move for the player, who will leave Lazio on a free in the summer.
But the 25-year-old seems destined to stay in Italy. talkSPORT revealed how Napoli were keen and Diakite's agent says another club has joined the race.
"I'll meet with Napoli, as I will with other clubs who are interested in Diakite," Ulisse Savini told La Lazio Siamo Noi.
"Napoli is a fascinating environment and their interest makes us proud. Let us just wait and see what happens.
"In Italy, though, there is a surprise side who hadn't made a move up until this moment. I think I'll meet with these clubs by the end of next week."
