Saviola signs new Benfica deal to quash QPR speculation

QPR's ambitious hopes of signing former Real Madrid and Barcelona striker Javier Saviola have been dashed.

The 30-year-old has put off any transfer switch and decided to extend his contract at Benfica for another season.

The ex-Argentina goalscorer, who called time on his international career at the tender age of 28, would have been a free agent in the summer and had a host clubs enquiring about his services.

QPR have been desperate for firepower, with manager Neil Warnock openly admitting he is keen to bring in a handful of players in January, but they will now have to turn their attention elsewhere.

Fulham strikers Bobby Zamora and Andy Johnson remain high on the west London side's wishlist.
