Newcastle and Blackburn are set to go head-to-head in a summer transfer battle for Egyptian star Shikabala.
The 25-year-old, who plays for Egyptian Premier League outfit Zamalek, could be available for a cut-price fee with just six months left on his current deal.
Relegated Birmingham were close to agreeing a deal but Newcastle and Blackburn are now leading the chase, despite interest from France and Germany.
Shikabala operates as a winger or playmaker behind the strikers and has 11 caps for Egypt and it is thought the Premier League is his preferred destination.
And with Kevin Nolan rejecting a new contract and Joey Barton’s future uncertain, Newcastle boss Alan Pardew will need to add to his midfield options.
