Exclusive – Gallacher: Mickelson is favourite but Westwood can win in Augusta

Former European Ryder Cup captain Bernard Gallacher believes it could be a great weekend for British players, including Lee Westwood, in the Masters at Augusta.

The World number 2 was pipped to the title by Phil Mickleson last year as he won the tournament for the third time.

But Gallacher feels the Englishman could get his revenge by winning the famous green jacket this year.

He told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: “[Lee Westwood] has got a great chance, he’s a wonderful player, probably the best striker [of a ball] in the field and if he has a good week on the greens he’ll win.

“This could be the most exciting Masters for many years, any amount of players can win, Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald, Graeme MacDowell, Padraig Harrington, Paul Casey and Lee Westwood they could all win.”

Gallacher did however warn that defending champion Phil Mickelson is strong favourite at the stunning course in Georgia.

He added: “He’ll be favourite this week having won last week and being defending champion. He’s on-form and he’s the man to beat.

“Players who play well at Augusta usually tend to play well every year, that’s why we’ve had so many repeat winners.”
