Exclusive - McIlroy insists he's learned lessons from Masters collapse

Rory McIlroy has told talkSPORT the next time he’s in contention for a Major title he will attack it with all he’s got.

The young Irishman led almost the whole way at the Masters at Augusta earlier this year only to fall at the final hurdle and see himself overtaken by Charl Schwartzel. But he insists he’s learned a valuable lesson from that experience.

He told the Keys and Gray Show: “I learned a lot about myself on that Sunday. I’ve had a lot of time to think about what I could have done differently in that position.

“I had a four shot lead at the start [of the final day] and I should have stayed aggressive and tried to stretch that lead. But I went out with the mindset to protect the lead and that wasn’t the thing to do.

“You should learn from your mistakes and not make the same mistake twice. I’ve moved on and hopefully I won’t make the same mistakes again.

“I feel comfortable on the Majors stage and hopefully I can break through this year. And now I know there’s no point trying to protect [a lead]. You want to try to get as far ahead as possible and that’s one of the things I’ll do next time.”
