Steven Taylor has told talkSPORT it will be the biggest honour of his career if he is selected as part of the Great Britain squad at the London Olympics.

The Newcastle defender expects to be out for the rest of the season with an Achilles injury but has set his sights on returning to play for Stuart Pearce’s side in the tournament, starting at the end of July.

He told Keys & Gray: “I don’t think I’ll play again this season. My main thing now is I want to try to get back training April time because I got a letter from Stuart Pearce the other day with regards to being in the Great Britain squad.

For me, it would be the biggest achievement and a massive honour for me— Steven Taylor

“There’s a lot of players who have been asked about it so I want to give myself the best chance and, if I can get fit, hopefully I will be up for selection in July. That’s what my main target is. It’s important to have a target. I’ve spoken to the club doctor about it and I need that goal.

“There’s no greater honour than representing your country and Great Britain. For me, it would be the biggest achievement and a massive honour for me. I want to be there.

“If I can get back April time training with the lads it gives me about eight weeks to get fully fit and fit for selection. If I get selected, fantastic, if not I will be devastated. ”
