Exclusive - Jackson: Drug cheats should still be banned from Olympics

Colin Jackson believes the BOA should continue its policy of banning athletes from the Olympics if they are caught taking illegal substances.

Reports emerged on Wednesday morning that the UK Anti-Doping agency is recommending a reduction in the length of bans for recreational drugs, claiming punishments are disproportionately harsh.

Once a participant has been found guilty of doping, they are automatically banned for life from competing in the Olympics, although they can represent Britain in other international competitions.

Former 110m hurdler Colin Jackson, however, insists participants know the rules before competing and, if found guilty, should still be lose the right to represent their country at the Olympics.

Speaking to the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show, he said: “The rules have been set out for a long time. If you play with fire you’re going to get burnt.

"The truth is that when you’re taking drugs, that is the consequence, you may never compete at the Olympic Games.

"I agree that the BOA should keep that type of stance.

“As an athlete you know the responsibility you should have for yourself. No-one else looks after you apart from you.

“Anything that goes in your body is down to you. Nowadays there are so many people who are there to help you and give you guidance

"Athletes who are foolish enough not to take that help pay the consequence.”
